The top 4 reasons why you should change your door locks

D BURGESS • May 24, 2022

Home security is an important consideration when it comes to keeping you and your family safe, but all too often complacency kicks in and people are not as alert to potential security breaches as they possibly could be. At DB Locksmiths we are regularly asked by customers to change their locks, and here are the top reasons why:

Moving house

Perhaps the most common reason why people have the locks on their doors changed is that they have recently moved into a new house. When you get the keys to a new house, you have no idea how many other people could potentially have a copy of them. This applies to all external doors, including gates and garages. By having the locks changed as soon as you move in, you can be 100% confident that only you can gain access to your property.

Lost or stolen keys

Losing keys or having them stolen is a huge inconvenience, but it happens from time to time. It only takes a moment of absentmindedness to put them down somewhere and lose them or have them stolen. When this happens, it’s important not to take any chances. Have your locks changed as soon as you possibly can to prevent others from gaining access to your home – you’ll need to call in an emergency locksmith to manage this as soon as possible to avoid compromising your security for any longer than you have to.

Locks are deteriorating

Lock barrels and keys can deteriorate over time, making the locks very tricky to operate. They can become stiff, and you run the risk of the key snapping off in the lock. Sometimes if your lock is becoming difficult to use you can ease it up with a little lubricant such as GT85, or organise for the locks to be repaired, but if either of these doesn’t work then it’s definitely time for a lock replacement. If the locks on your doors are particularly poor quality, then you will feel reassured if you have them upgraded. The better the lock is, the less chance there is that someone other than you will be able to gain entry to the house.

After a break-in

A break-in can be a traumatic experience, and many people choose to have all of their locks changed if this has happened to them. This helps them sleep better at night, safe in the knowledge that the house’s security has been ramped up and any old keys won’t work anymore.
